Your Car or Van's Engine

Here at the Carbase Autocentres, we offer a range of services to ensure your engine is running safely and beautiful, including: Coolant Change, Cambelt Checks & Clutch Check-ups.

The cambelt, which is also known as a timing belt, is a crucial part of your vehicle's engine. You need to replace your cambelt given it is made from rubber and is subject to the rigours of your engine.

Your car's engine needs coolant to keep it at the right temperature year round. It's important to maintain your cooling system, which is why we recommend a coolant change every two years to prolong the life of your car. Coolant is a mixture of antifreeze and water, which stops the engine from freezing in winter, and overheating in summer.

When should I replace my cambelt?

They don't last forever, so depending on your vehicle manufacturer the average replacement schedule would be around every 5 years or 60,000 miles (depending on which comes first). It would be best to consult your vehicle manual or speak to your mechanic - they can advise if you need a replacement.

What are the signs of a faulty cambelt?

If you suspect there are issues with your engine, it could potentially be a cambelt issue. Metal shavings in oil due to wear on the cylinder head valves are a common issue that causes damage to your cambelt. Another problem is engine oil and coolant leaks which can affect your cambelt.

A misaligned cambelt causes vibration and heat as the internal components can fail, causing greater problems for your engine and affecting the general performance of your vehicle. Cracks on the belt are another potential issue, or the wearing of the cambelt teeth - meaning you have a lot to look out for. A specialist will have detailed knowledge of this and it is always worth consulting with them.
