Best used convertibles 2016

When the British weather plays ball, there are few things better than driving down to the coast, soaking up the sunshine and feeling the cool, salty air against your face. Convertibles aren't just for the summer, though - they make everyday drives an absolute pleasure and a whole lot more fun, so long as you choose the right car.

Whether you're looking for something special to use at the weekends, or a convertible that's both practical and alluring, there's a convertible car out there for you. Below, we take a look at five of the best used convertibles for 2016, and examine what makes them so great.

Mazda MX-5

Renowned for offering a slick, fun driving experience, as well as incredible reliability, the Mazda MX-5 is an absolute classic. It's been called the best-selling two-seater convertible in the world, and it's easy to see why. When you buy an MX-5, you know it's going to last, even if it's already got a fair few miles on the clock.

Of course, it looks fantastic too, whether the roof's up or down. Most models come with a soft top that can easily be rolled back manually, but others have an electric retractable roof. If it doesn't come with one already, you could choose to fit a hard top, which you may be keen to do during the harsher winter months. You could even add a boot bag or luggage rack if you find yourself in need of extra storage space.

Essentially, if you've always wanted a Porsche, an MX-5 is a great, affordable alternative. It's a purchase you won't regret.

Mini Convertible

The Mini Convertible is fast becoming a classic. It may be small, but that doesn't mean you should underestimate it, as it's just as fun to drive as the MX-5. Auto Express even named it 'Convertible of the Year' at its 2016 New Car Awards.

Thanks to trusty German engineering, Minis are well-known for their reliability and fantastic build quality. The convertible model has room for four passengers, making it a little more practical for everyday use than the MX-5, but perhaps only if you have children, as there's not much legroom in those back seats. In fact, the Mini's compact size means the boot is lacking in space too.

While the Mini isn't designed for huge food shops or family holidays,  the convertible is the perfect car to take for a spin on a fine summer's day. There are loads of different customisation options available, so you could really make yours stand out - if it doesn't come with one already, why not pay a little extra for a Union Jack roof? You certainly won't lose it in a car park ever again!

The Mini looks and feels fun, is economic to run and it won't let you down.

Audi A3 Cabriolet

If you're after something a bit more high-end and luxurious, the Audi A3 Cabriolet is your convertible. You'd be hard-pushed to find a more comfortable ride, and the steering is so precise that those twisting B-roads won't be a problem.

Like the Mini, there's space for four in the Cabriolet, but adults may feel a little cosy in the back. The boot, on the other hand, is generous in size, and the rear seats can be folded down to create even more room. This makes it an ideal car for families - the kids certainly won't be embarrassed when you pull up to the school gate in an Audi!

Naturally, the A3 Cabriolet is at the higher end of the price scale when new, but the benefit of buying used is that this model suddenly becomes a lot more affordable. If you've got the cash, an A3 should definitely be on your radar.

Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet

It may not be as luxurious, but the Volkswagen Golf is an absolute joy to drive, as it offers an incredibly smooth and comfortable ride. You can fold the soft top down in just 9.5 seconds at the click of a button. You can even do this whilst you're on the road, so long as you're driving slower than 20mph. However, we wouldn't recommend trying this.

No matter whether you opt fora speedy model or a more economic one, every Golf Cabriolet comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen. You can access all of your entertainment from this screen, including your music, which you'll no doubt want to blast out on a hot, sunny day.

The Golf doesn't just offer fun, it's practical too. There's space for four passengers, and the boot space is pretty generous. Everything about this convertible is high-quality, from the plush interior to the robust exterior. This is a convertible that's built to last.

Add the fact that the Golf is cheap to run, and you're onto a real winner.

Mercedes SLK

A sleek but rather sporty convertible, the Mercedes SLK is the ultimate toy for big boys and girls. It's wider than some of the other convertibles mentioned above and has a real presence on the road. This makes it practical for everyday use, whether you want to pick up a pint of milk in style, or just get a bit more enjoyment out of the drive to work.

The boot is large and easy to access, so it's even suitable for doing the monthly food shop. However, this is a luxury convertible, and you'll no doubt want to treat it as such. It's certainly the perfect vehicle to take away with you on a romantic staycation.

Mercedes-Benz is also famous for building cars to the highest of standards, so the SLK won't let you down in that department.

Don't fancy any of the above? We sell a wide selection of convertibles from a number of different manufacturers, so why not take a look? If you have any questions or would like any advice, please get in touch - we're more than happy to help!
