The BMW X1 may be the smallest SUV that the German super-manufacturer offers, but inside it's something of an Aladdin's Cave. Offering generous amounts of space in the front and rear this doesn't feel like a small car. The BMW X1 is a small but mighty status car ideal for the whole family. Styling and image

While it may be more compact than its rivals the Audi Q3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA, the BMW X1 still packs an imposing punch. The body styling makes it resemble a tall hatchback, but if you are looking to jump on the growing trend for larger cars, this one hits the nail on the head. With BMW's typical attractive finish and availability of striking colours such as Alpine White and Le Mans Blue, the BMW X1 wins big on style.

Interior and practicality

The BMW X1 has a wealth of storage space, with a huge 420 litre boot and a false floor so things you carry regularly can be stored out of sight. There are two options for your rear seats, either easy to fold down seats or a sliding rear seat for even easier access. In the front you'll find generous amounts of storage provided and good size door bins, ideal if you are travelling with the whole family. Legroom is good in both the front and rear.

The steering wheel has both rake and reach adjustability so few drivers will struggle to find a comfortable driving position.

Performance and economy

Having first hit the market in 2009, you'll find a variety of different used BMW X1s available. The 20d (2.0 litre diesel) offers the best balance of economy and performance but none of the versions - 16d, 18d, 23d and 25d - will disappoint.

The sDrive is the rear-wheel drive version giving great traction and with a six-speed gearbox as standard.

Ride and handling

While some high riding cars are notoriously challenging around sharp bends the BMW X1 is surprisingly nimble, with the xDrive models offering excellent grip and handling. It's also pretty fast too - getting from 0-60mph in around 7.6 seconds.

The ribbed bonnet means that it's easy to see where the nose of the car is and at the back it's a straight finish.
